What does OTP True mean?
"OTP: True" is a search filter that AO3 users can use to search for fics that feature only one pairing. If someone were to look for fics under the "Iwaizumi Hajime/Oikawa Tooru" tag and add the "OTP: True" search filter to the "Search within results" box underneath the "More Options" section, they would see results for fics that feature ONLY IwaOi in the "Relationships" category. So when I compare Overall Fics for a pairing to OTP True Fics for a pairing, that means that I am looking at the total number of fics that have a specific pairing tagged vs. the number of fics ONLY featuring that specific pairing.Because there is no "Main Ship" feature on AO3 (though I can dream...), looking at the ratio of OTP True fics to Overall Fics is the best indicator we have of how many of a pairing's fics feature them as the main pairing.
Is a fic considered OTP True if it only features one romantic relationship but also lists platonic relationships?
Nope! Even if only one romantic relationship is indicated (as denoted by the use of the "/" between character names), a fic is NOT considered OTP True if it also contains a platonic relationship tag (as denoted by the use of "&" between character names). For example, a fic that tags "Hinata Shouyou/Kozume Kenma" but also tags the platonic relationship of "Kozume Kenma & Kuroo Tetsurou" will not appear in results for OTP: True searches.
What about fics that only tag one relationship but actually feature background ships that aren't tagged?
As long as a fic only tags one relationship, it doesn't matter how many background ships pop up in the actual text of the fic–it will still register as OTP: True.Example: a fic tagged with only "Akaashi Keiji/Bokuto Koutarou" that hints at or features SakuAtsu within the text of the fic is still considered OTP: True.
Do you have a background in data science/analysis?
Nope, unless you consider the half-year I took of AP Statistics before I dropped that class my final year of high school. I did take a stats-adjacent class in college but I can't say it really taught me anything I use in the data stuff I share today.I just really love spreadsheets 🫡
